The city was founded in 1849 as a Riverport town and agricultural center. It served as a railroad hub for both passenger and freight trains until the 1960s. The Martinez Historical Society was founded in 1973 to prevent this 1890 cottage and its surrounding land from being turned into yet another parking lot in Martinez.
