The Expert's Guide to Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. This type of massage is often recommended after you've been physically active, whether it's a strenuous workout or a long run, because this "toughens" up your muscles and increases blood flow to the area.

The Expert's Guide to Deep Tissue Massage

In most cases, deep tissue massages are performed using some variant of the classic full-body massage routine. Be aware that you will likely be sore the next day as your therapist works out adhesions in these deeper layers of muscles. In general, deep tissue massages aren't typically performed on pregnant women simply because they can be uncomfortable at times due to extra pressure on the abdomen.

How long does a deep tissue massage last?

As far as the duration of a deep tissue massage, you can expect to relax for about 60 minutes. However, it's important to remember that your therapist will spend time explaining what he or she is going to do and make sure you feel comfortable before starting off. It may take some time for them to loosen up these deeper layers of muscles, but be patient; the end result will definitely be worth it.

What should I wear during my session?

Typically, most people prefer wearing clothing like yoga pants or sweatpants that are easy to slip into and out of when they're on the table. You might even want to bring along an oversized t-shirt if you wish; it doesn't matter because it's highly likely that your therapist will drape a sheet over you.

What should I expect during the massage?

Before you even step foot on the table, your therapist will ask how much pressure you want and whether or not there are certain areas of your body that are more sensitive than others. If you're new to deep tissue massages, chances are high that they'll spend the first part of their time simply working out adhesions in these deeper layers of muscles. This is especially important if you've been physically active recently because this "toughens up" your muscles and increases blood flow to the area (just like a regular workout). Once they feel like these adhesions have been worked out, then things get fun.

If you're a back sleeper, this is a great time to snooze because your therapist will focus on rubbing out all the many knots and adhesions in your back. Many people report that it almost feels like their massage therapist is ironing out individual muscles, but don't worry; this is just what deep tissue massages are all about.

As far as the massage itself goes, expect anywhere from 5-20 minutes of intense pressure per body part. If there's an area of your body where you feel you have more tension than others (e.g., your neck or shoulders), then be sure to point it out so they can spend extra time working it out. This may not seem like much time until you consider the fact that they'll be working out multiple adhesions in the muscles and tendons.

What should I avoid during my session?

If you're getting a deep tissue massage on your back, avoid eating anything heavy beforehand because it could make you feel nauseated…even if it's something as small as a granola bar. Also, remember not to go into this massaging expecting them to spend time rubbing your arms or legs—that's what Swedish massages are for! Instead, the focus of this type of massage is on realigning these deeper layers of muscle which can get extremely uncomfortable at times.

Why do I need to drink water after the massage?

Deep tissue massages work by loosening up deeper layers of muscles and increasing blood flow to the area. This can leave you feeling extremely dehydrated, so be sure to drink at least one glass of water for every half hour spent in the massage session.

What are some things I should do after my session?

You may want to schedule a follow-up appointment within 48 hours if your therapist worked out particularly stubborn adhesions because it's likely that they'll need time to recover and harden up again. Also, remember not to go back until all of these adhesions have hardened—otherwise it defeats the purpose of the deep tissue massage. Just like with any type of workout (be it running or weightlifting), you can't expect results overnight; the same applies here!

Where else could I learn about deep tissue massages?

Why does my therapist want to schedule another appointment right after the session is over?
