About Pacheco In Contra Costa County, California

Dr. J. H. Carothers laid out the town in 1857 and named it after Salvio Pacheco, the grantee of the Rancho Monte del Diablo Mexican land grant. Pacheco had a post office from 1859 to 1913, and again from 1955 to the present.

Pacheco was a prosperous commercial center for a short time. Pacheco Slough was deep enough to receive ocean-going shipping during this time period. Pacheco was the county's commercial center from 1851 to nearly 1873, serving as a shipping port for grain grown in the Ygnacio, San Ramon, and Tassajara valleys, with warehouses, a flour mill, and shops along the creek. Walnut Creek (then Pacheco Creek) flowed deep and free into Suisun Bay. Pacheco was a major shipping port for central Contra Costa Couty for over 20 years.
